Cut out a background in your browser

One click hides the background behind a layer mask. Because it's a mask and not an eraser, you can paint back anything the automatic pass got wrong.

A selection converted to a layer mask in PSCraft

The quick way

  1. Open the editor and drop in your photo.
  2. Select the photo's layer. In the Properties panel, under Quick Actions, click Remove Background.
  3. The background disappears and a mask thumbnail appears next to the layer.
  4. Choose File › Export › Quick Export as PNG to save it with transparency.

Remove Background finds the subject, softens the edge slightly so hair and fuzzy outlines aren't cut hard, and turns the result into a layer mask in a single undo step. The original pixels are still there underneath.

What to expect from the automatic result

Subject detection in PSCraft is a classical image-analysis algorithm, not a neural network. It does well when the subject stands apart from its surroundings: a product on a plain backdrop, a person against a wall, an object on a table. Busy backgrounds, or a subject whose colours match what's behind it, will need some manual help.

That is the trade for running entirely on your device: there's no model to download and no image sent to a server.

Fixing the edge by hand

  • Paint on the mask. Select the mask's thumbnail. Black paint hides the layer; white paint brings it back.
  • Start from a better selection. Use Quick Selection or Object Selection to mark the subject yourself, then add a layer mask from the selection.
  • Refine soft edges. Select and Mask adjusts radius, smoothing, feather and contrast for hair and fur.
  • Clean up plain backgrounds. For a flat-colour backdrop, the Magic Wand often gets a cleaner result than any automatic tool.

After the cutout

With the subject isolated you can drop a new layer underneath for a different backdrop, add a Drop Shadow layer style to ground a product shot, or save a PSD so the mask stays adjustable later.

Common questions

Is there a limit on how many images I can cut out?
No. Nothing is metered because nothing runs on our servers. Each image is processed by your own computer.
Why did it miss part of my subject?
The detection relies on contrast between subject and background, not on a trained AI model. When the two blend together, paint the missing area back on the mask with white, or make the selection yourself with Quick Selection.
How do I save with a transparent background?
Export as PNG or WebP, which both keep transparency. JPEG has no transparency, so the hidden area would be filled in.
