An ad-free, open-source alternative to Photopea

Photopea is good, and if it does what you need there's no urgent reason to leave. People usually look for an alternative for one of three reasons: the ads, a preference for open-source software, or performance on heavy files.

Why people switch

No advertising. Photopea's free plan shows ads beside the workspace, and a paid plan removes them. PSCraft has no ads and no paid plan.

Code you can inspect. PSCraft runs PhotoCraft, whose source is public under the MIT and Apache-2.0 licences. Photopea is closed source.

GPU compositing. PSCraft draws the canvas through WebGPU, or WebGL2 where WebGPU isn't available, which helps with large canvases and deep layer stacks.

Why you might stay with Photopea

  • More file formats. Photopea opens Sketch, Adobe XD, GIMP's XCF, CorelDRAW and others that PSCraft doesn't.
  • Phones and tablets. Photopea adapts to small touch screens. PSCraft is built for desktop browsers.
  • Fonts. Photopea ships a large font library. PSCraft's browser build has two typefaces.
  • Maturity. Photopea has been refined since 2013. PSCraft's engine is in alpha and still has gaps.

What's the same

Both are free, need no account, run in a browser tab and process your files on your own computer. Both use Photoshop's layout and shortcuts, and both open and save PSD.

You don't have to choose

A PSD saved from one opens in the other. Keep both bookmarked, try PSCraft on the files you actually work with, and use whichever handles a given document better. The point-by-point comparison has the details.
